Before:

During:
  • Page 1 - What do you notice about the letters? (darker, taller)
  • How could you make the tower taller?
  • What are they using to measure their towers? How? (measuring using shovels)
  • What other measurement tools could you use?

After:
  • Do you think that a spoon or a shovel is a good tool for measuring? Why/why not?
  • What did you notice about how they measured?

Extensions/Provocations (Small Group, Learning Centres, Whole Group, Transitions):
  • Small Group: exploring measurement (measuring bodies, furniture etc) using nonstandard measurement tools (e.g., shovel, spoons, straws, sticks)
  • Outdoor Play: tracing bodies with chalk and measuring using different nonstandard measurement tools (e.g. popsicle sticks, blocks)
  • Sand: Using moon sand and different moulds (add in different measurement tools)
