Shape Shift

Mathematical Concepts and Language:
  • introduction of shapes and language: triangle, semi-circle, crescent, trapezoid, rectangle, circle, oval, diamond, and square
  • combination of shapes (composition and decomposition of shapes)


Questioning:

Before:
  • Looking around the room: ask students, what shapes do you notice in the classroom? 

During:
  • Ask students to identify the colours or features of the shapes.
  • Discuss the different shapes used to compose the characters in the book.

After:
  • Discuss similarities and differences between shapes.
  • Talk about characteristics of the shapes.

  • Provocation: provide attribute blocks and iPads, children can create and capture different pictures, people using blocks.
  • Outdoors: Students can go on a shape hunt - they could photograph, draw, or graph the different shapes that they find.
  • Art Studio: provide a variety of different cut out shapes for children to create and put together.
  • Barrier Game: using attribute blocks to create pictures, patterns with partners (promotes descriptive language use)
