Mathematical Concepts and Language:
- introduction of shapes and language: triangle, semi-circle, crescent, trapezoid, rectangle, circle, oval, diamond, and square
- combination of shapes (composition and decomposition of shapes)
Questioning:
Before:
- Looking around the room: ask students, what shapes do you notice in the classroom?
During:
- Ask students to identify the colours or features of the shapes.
- Discuss the different shapes used to compose the characters in the book.
After:
- Discuss similarities and differences between shapes.
- Talk about characteristics of the shapes.
Extensions/Provocations (Small Group, Learning Centres, Whole Group,
Transitions):
- Provocation: provide attribute blocks and iPads, children can create and capture different pictures, people using blocks.
- Outdoors: Students can go on a shape hunt - they could photograph, draw, or graph the different shapes that they find.
- Art Studio: provide a variety of different cut out shapes for children to create and put together.
- Barrier Game: using attribute blocks to create pictures, patterns with partners (promotes descriptive language use)
