Questioning:

Before:
  • What is the smallest number?
  • What does the word, "none", mean?

During:
  • Show me zero.
  • What do we have in the classroom that shows us zero?

After:
  • Show me zero. What do you have that is zero?

Extensions/Provocations (Small Group, Learning Centres, Whole Group, Transitions):
  • Small Group: Creating a classroom book (about zero)
  • Game (small group or learning centres): How many do you hear? (using a tin can, drop jewels in and ask how many they heard - try dropping in zero)
  • Number Line: add 0 to the class number line
  • Game (whole group/transition game): Blast Off - counting backwards from 10 to 0. Student who gets 0 is out.
