I am Yoga

Day One: Activating Prior Knowledge, Building Knowledge (making connections, oral language focus)
  • What do you think of when you hear the word "yoga"?
  • Discuss: who knows about yoga? what do you know about it?
  • What is the girl doing in the picture (on the cover)?
  • Why is she sitting like this?
  • What could she be thinking?
  • Can you sit like this? (have children try the yoga pose)
Day Two: Five Finger Retell

Day Three: Vocabulary Development
  • yoga
  • imagine
  • soar
  • stand up
  • relax/calm

Day Four: Higher Order Questioning (asking, discussing, reflecting - between the line questions)
  • "I feel so small in a world so big" - what does that mean to you?
  • How can you "make room in your mind or your heart"?
Extensions for Learning Centres or Opportunities to Engage with Writing:
  • Yoga: set up mats, provide pictures or book as reference (music)
  • Take photos of children doing yoga (encourage writing or discussion about how it makes them feel)
  • Draw a picture of "what your mind looks like when your mind is not quiet or your wiggling body can't be still"
  • Cosmic Yoga (youtube)
