Questioning:
Before:
- What do you think the story may be about?
- Why do you think the duckling is laughing?
- Have you ever played hide and seek? Where was your best hiding spot? How did you play?
- With small group, play a game of hide and seek using ducks or objects ("Close your eyes, ____ is going to hide a duck in the classroom and then we are going to search for it"). This provides an opportunity to experience hiding and looking.
During:
- Can you help me to be a "quack-u-lator"? (quack with me in the story to count)
- Where is the duckling hiding?
- Where should Little Quack hide?
- How is Mama feeling when she cannot find Little Quack? How do you think he feels?
- Focus on Positional Language: in the log, under the lily pad, on top of the log)
After:
- What happens at the end of the story?
- Can you make a connection?
Extensions/Provocations (Small Group, Learning Centres, Whole Group,
Transitions):
- Dramatize, act out parts of story (problem solving)
- Puppets/Ducks: small world play, water play (students can re-enact, dramatize story)
- 5 Little Ducks Song: fingerplay, music and movement (song can be used as a transition)
- 5 Frames: set out double sided counters, tell stories about ducks
- Barrier Game: hide duck in, under, beside, below the barrier - other students can follow directions to find duck or to describe where it is
